In Stock market we hear every day the terms “bulls” and “bears“. What does it actually means?

A Bull is an investor or a trader who is positive about the market and expecting it to rise for his expected duration (which can be as small as hour or as long as years). A bull market is a market that is on the rise and where the economy is sound. Simply put, a bull market refers to a market that is on the rise. It is typified by a sustained increase in price, for example in equity markets in the prices of companies’ shares. the most common definition of a bull market is a situation in which stock prices rise by 20%,  In such times, investors often have faith that the uptrend will continue over the long term. Typically, in this scenario, the country’s economy is strong and employment levels are high. Interestingly, a bull market is named for the way that this particular animal attacks its victims. A bull thrusts its horns up into the air, thus becoming a metaphor for market activity under these conditions.

A bear on the opposite side an investor or a trader who is negative about the market and expecting it to fall for his expected duration (which can be as small as hour or as long as years). A bear market exists in an economy that is receding, where most stocks are declining in value. A bear market is one that is in decline, typically having fallen 20% or more from recent highs. Share prices are continuously dropping, resulting in a downward trend that investors believe will continue, which, in turn, perpetuates the downward spiral. During a bear market, the economy will typically slow down and unemployment will rise as companies begin laying off workers. Interestingly, a bear market is named for the way that this particular animal attacks its victims. A bear swipes downward during an attack, thus becoming a metaphor for market activity under these conditions.

Comparision of a Bull and Bear market

In a bull market, we see strong demand and weak supply for securities. As a result, share prices will rise as investors compete to obtain available equity.

In a bear market, the opposite is true as more people are looking to sell than buy. The demand is significantly lower than supply and, as a result, share prices drop.

The Bottom Line

Both bear and bull markets will have a large influence on your investments, so it’s a good idea to take some time to determine what the market is doing when making an investment decision.
